Willow Smith is bringing her anxiety experience to the show.
The "Whip My Hair" singer, 21, sat down to have an
open talk with Ireland Baldwin, 26, in the latest edition of Red Table Talk,
which premiered April 27. Willow (daughter of Jada Pinkett-Smith and Will
Smith) and Ireland (daughter of Kim Basinger and Alec Baldwin) discussed their
personal experiences as children growing up in the spotlight during their
conversation.
Willow revealed that when she was younger, her mother didn't
understand her disorder immediately away. "It was difficult," she
said. "She didn't seem to comprehend my anxiousness when I was younger.
Because she had seen so many of her friends die as a child—she had gone through
so much—my problems seemed...[smaller] to her."
Willow added, "And that was incredibly frustrating for
me as a child." "How can you not perceive my psychological and
emotional struggle?" I wondered.
The actress discovered how much she related
to what her daughter was going through after they sat down for a
heart-to-heart.
"We had a conversation recently, and
she said, 'I never thought that I genuinely had anxiety,'" Willow stated.
"And she'd been burying it for so long, as if she didn't know. So I had to
forgive her for saying things like, 'Sure, yeah, yeah...I get it, but it's not
that horrible.'"
Ireland's difficulties with anxiety were
compounded by an eating disorder, as well as struggles with alcohol and
pharmaceutical medicines.
The model told Willow, "I've been
through so much before I truly got help." "I was in a very abusive
relationship at the time, and I did seek treatment... I didn't want to call it
that for a long time, just like I didn't want to call my anxiety—anxiety."
"I need to overcome what I've gone
through and free myself of all the agony I've kept away in an unreachable
place," Ireland continued.
