Cristiano Ronaldo Returns to Soccer for First Game After Baby Boy's Death

Cristiano Ronaldo made his first appearance on the field since the death of his son earlier this month in Manchester United's match against Arsenal on April 23.

Cristiano Ronaldo has returned to the soccer field less than a week after announcing the heartbreaking death of his baby son. On April 23, the 37-year-old soccer great joined his Manchester United colleagues on the field for a match against Arsenal. Despite Ronaldo's goal 34 minutes into the game, United would go on to lose 3-1 to their opponents. Ronaldo reached a big milestone in his Premier League career with his latest goal: he scored his 100th goal. The sportsman commemorated the occasion by touchingly pointing to the sky, a gesture that some supporters mistook for a tribute to his son. Ronaldo later appeared to back up the claim by tweeting a snapshot of the incident with a red heart emoji.

Ronaldo and his partner Georgina Rodrguez released a joint statement on April 18 in which they stated that their baby son had died. The couple had announced that they were expecting twins last October.

"We would like to thank the doctors and nurses for all their expert care and support," it continued. "We are all devastated at this loss and we kindly ask for privacy at this very difficult time." The statement concluded, "Our baby boy, you are our angel. We will always love you."

Three days after the devastating news, the couple shared a snapshot of their family on Instagram, including their new baby girl. Ronaldo also has Cristiano Jr., 11, twins Mateo and Eva, 4, and Alana, his first daughter with Georgina, who is four years old.

"Home sweet home. Gio and our baby girl are finally together with us," the post's caption read. "We want to thank everyone for all the kind words and gestures. Your support is very important and we all felt the love and respect that you have for our family. Now it's time to be grateful for the life that we've just welcomed into this world."
