Will Smith hit Chris Rock on Oscars
telecast
Chris
Rock made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith's shaved head, which her husband Will
Smith did not seem to appreciate. "Jada, I love you, 'G.I. Jane 2,' can't
wait to see that," Rock quipped as he presented the award for best
documentary. The camera cut to Pinkett Smith, who sat next to Smith and rolled
her eyes. "That was a nice one," Rock replied, seemingly in response
to the joke's poor reception. Pinkett Smith has been candid about her alopecia,
an autoimmune disease that causes hair loss. Rock then chuckled and
said, "Oh uh," as Smith approached him on stage and slapped him
across the face.
"Keep
my wife's name out of your f***ing mouth!" Smith yelled twice during the confrontation,
according to Elam. "Oh, wow," Rock replied. The verbal
portion of the altercation between Rock and Smith was muffled for home viewers.
"That was the greatest night in the history of television," Rock
declared as the theater fell silent. According to the LAPD, Chris Rock will not
seek charges against Will Smith for the Oscars slap.
Moments
thereafter, Sean "Diddy" Combs appeared on stage and promised Smith
and Rock that they would settle things "like family" later. Smith
went to the stage about 40 minutes after the incident to win the Oscar for best
actor and apologized to the Academy and his fellow candidates, but he did not
mention Rock by name.
Mr. Smith will not be able to attend any
Academy events or activities, in person or online, for a period of ten years
beginning April 8, 2022, including but not limited to the Academy Awards,"
Academy President David Rubin and CEO Dawn Hudson said in a statement on
Friday.
