Users are departing in droves, according to Twitter, a day after Elon Musk purchased the social media platform.
Some of Twitter's most popular accounts lost hundreds of thousands of followers overnight the day after Elon Musk's takeover of the social media platform was disclosed, while others saw an odd rise in followers.
Following the news of Musk's takeover, the platform said it observed a mass exodus of users on Tuesday, as well as a flood of new accounts.
According to NBC, Twitter said in a statement that "although we continue to take action on accounts that violate our spam policy, which can influence follower counts, these changes appear to be mostly a result of an increase in new account creation and deactivation."
Following Musk's acquisition, many Republicans have expressed elation about a perceived loosening of Twitter's post regulations, while Democrats have raised concerns that the billionaire will allow misinformation to run wild on the platform.
In a statement regarding the purchase, Musk, who paid $44 billion for the social network, emphasized the value of free speech, calling it the "bedrock of democracy."
"I also want to make Twitter better than it has ever been by adding new features, opening up the algorithms to increase trust, beating spambots, and authenticating all humans. Twitter has enormous potential, and I'm excited to work with the company and the Twitter community to realize it "Musk stated the following.
