DJ Black Coffee wins his first Grammy Award

DJ Black Coffee has received his first Grammy Award for his album Subconsciously, which was released in 2021 and won in the Best Dance/Electronic Album category. Nkosinathi Maphumulo, a South African music producer, beat out a total of five other nominees, including Illenium, Major Lazer, and Ten City, to win the category. Black Coffee's first Grammy win comes after just his first nomination in a career that has blossomed since his first BET Awards in 2016. He took home the award for Best International Act, putting himself on the path to this point in his career. He's said he wants to win a Grammy for a long time.

In his address, Black Coffee congratulated his record partners, including Pharrell and David Guetta, who "believed in working with a lesser artist like myself and believing me and trusting my ear," according to Black Coffee. Sabrina Claudio, Usher, and Diplo are among the other musicians included on Subconsciously. "It was extremely crucial for me to make this record accessible to as many people as possible when I was working on it," Black Coffee told Billboard about his nomination. "The album explores a variety of sounds and styles while remaining faithful to my background. I wanted to create an album that could be enjoyed not only in the vehicle or at a club, but also when cleaning the house, going through a difficult period, and everything in between. It pushes limits, and I believe that's where the attraction rests in the end."
